I recently had a VERY successful anticipatory activity to introduce our newest unit on persuasive arguments. Students started to think critically about what it takes to make something believable or not by taking an active class survey on which of the following they believe in:
It may take some extra time to have students rip up the paper and label the signs themselves, but the physical motions seemed to do a really good job of getting them focused and on-board. You can download my lesson plan and powerpoint presentation below:
